Here in Florida, many boat owners live on the water or are able to keep their boats at a marina. However, not everyone is so blessed and a lot of us need to use a boat trailer in order to transport our boats from our houses to the body of water we want to boat in. Here’s what you need to know about safely towing your boat trailer.

Secure Your Hitch

Ensuring that your hitch and towing chains are secure is a crucial part of towing safety. You don’t want your hitch to become loose on the road, and you also don’t want to forget your towing chains. Always double-check your hitch and make sure it’s nice and tight before you drive.

Plot Out Your Towing Route

Not every road is going to be very friendly to towing, which means it pays to look up a suitable route in advance. Look for routes that are reasonably straight and flat, with no construction projects and little traffic. You may find that certain backroads are easier to use than some highways, but it’s always best to stay on signed and paved roads whenever possible.

Exercise Caution While Driving

Finally, when you’re actively towing, it’s important to put all your focus towards safe driving. Don’t use your phone or eat or mess with the radio; delegate tasks to your passengers and switch drivers if you need a break. Travel five to ten miles below posted speed limits and avoid changing lanes as much as you can. Be mindful of other drivers and try to keep some distance between yourself and the cars ahead of you so you can safely brake when you need to.
